Fit 901

In an emergency

Call 911

Read them this address

80 Cumberland St

Memphis, TN 38112

Then tell them how to find it

South of Broad. The last building on the left, all the way at the end of the street, at the top of the hill.

The building runs 74–80 Cumberland. Tell them which door to come to.

Then, if you can, call Fit 901: our number

Call 911 first, every time. Nobody at Fit 901 can promise that anyone will answer our line, respond, or arrive.

What the dispatcher will ask you

Have it ready if you can. You do not need any of it to call — call first, and work it out with them on the line.

  • The type of emergency.
  • The approximate age of the patient.
  • What is wrong.

Say it like this

“An approximately 50 year old diabetic man, alert and complaining of sudden onset dizziness and chest pain.”

Then get them in the door

Have someone at the door to lead people in, if possible, and unlock the door if it is closed.

Someone is hurt, or collapses

  1. Call 911.
  2. Stay on the line and do what the dispatcher tells you.
  3. Have someone at the door to lead them in, and unlock it if it is closed.
  4. Once help is on the way, call Fit 901.
  • Do not move a seriously injured person unless they are in immediate danger where they are.
  • Chest pain, unusual pain, dizziness, feeling faint, nausea, shortness of breath, overheating, chills, or anything that worries you: stop, and call. Do not push through it. That is a rule here, not advice.
  • If you are alone, stop and call before you get worse. Nobody else is going to notice.

Trapped under a bar

  1. Dump the bar. That is what the safety arms and the open collars are for.
  2. If you cannot get out from under it, get to your phone and call 911.
  • This is why the rules exist: no maximal or near-maximal lifts when you are alone.
  • Safety arms or pins are required for every squat, bench press, and overhead press done in a rack.
  • No collars on the bar for bench press without safety arms, so the weight can be dumped.
  • No rope climbs, rings, pull-up bars, or overhead apparatus alone.

A carbon monoxide alarm is sounding

  1. Leave the building immediately.
  2. Go to the meeting place: the telephone pole out front, at the top of the hill.
  3. Call 911 from outside.
  4. Call Fit 901.
  • Do not investigate it. Do not silence it. Do not go back in until the fire department says it is clear.
  • The building is heated by propane. Carbon monoxide has no smell and no color — the alarm is the only warning you get.
  • If the carbon monoxide monitor is not running, the gym is closed. Do not go in.

Fire, smoke, or a smell of gas

  1. Get out, and take everyone with you.
  2. Go to the meeting place: the telephone pole out front, at the top of the hill.
  3. Call 911 from outside.
  4. Call Fit 901.
  • Do not stop to collect anything, and do not go back in for anything.
  • Keep clothing, towels, mats, paper, and equipment well clear of the propane heater, and never move or adjust it.

If you evacuate, meet here

The telephone pole out front, at the top of the hill.

Smoke, fire, a carbon monoxide alarm — anything that puts you outside, everybody goes to the same place. Do not go back in for anything, and do not go back in until the fire department says it is clear.

The power is out

  1. If the power is out when you arrive, do not go in. The gym is closed.
  2. If the power fails while you are inside, leave.
  • No power means no light to see or exit by, and no working carbon monoxide monitor.

Somebody is here who should not be

  1. Get out if you can, and call 911 from somewhere safe.
  2. Tell Fit 901 as soon as you are safe.
  • Never let anyone in — no guests, no family, no workout partners, no deliveries, no one, even if they say they are a member. Everyone checks in on their own.
  • Watch that nobody follows you in when you enter, or out when you leave.
  • Nobody under 18 may be in the building during an unsupervised session, for any reason, including your own children. There is no exception to this one.

Something looks wrong before you go in

  1. Do not go in.
  2. Leave, and call Fit 901 or 911.
  • A person loitering, a door ajar, damage, an odor, an alarm sounding — any of it is enough. Look around before you go in.
  • Do not go in if you feel unwell, or are ill, injured, or impaired.

If you train alone

Nobody is here. Nobody is watching. Nobody is coming.

That is not a warning we are obliged to print. It is the actual arrangement, and everything below follows from it.

Before every solo session

  • Carry a charged phone on your body. Not in a bag, not in a locker, not across the room. No phone, no solo session.
  • Tell someone you are training alone and when you expect to finish. Ask them to check on you if they do not hear from you.
  • Check in when you arrive, and check out when you leave.

What is not here

  • No coach, no staff, no first aid, no CPR, and no emergency response on site.
  • Cameras may or may not be present, and may or may not be recording. Nobody is watching any of them, ever. No camera will call for help.
  • We make no promise that an AED, a first aid kit, a fire extinguisher, or a carbon monoxide monitor is present, stocked, charged, or working. Do not count on any of them.
  • Booking a session is a record, not a rescue plan. Nobody is expecting you, and nobody is coming to look for you.
  • If you are hurt, it may be hours before anyone finds you. That is the risk being accepted.

You never have to train alone. Any session you missed can be made up with a coach instead — book a coached session.

Afterward — tell us

  1. As soon as you are safe, report it to Fit 901.
  • Any injury, incident, damage, equipment fault, unsafe condition, security concern, or anyone in the building who should not be — however minor it seems.
  • Small things are how we find the big one before it happens. Report it even if nothing came of it.

How to reach us

  • Call the gym: our number
  • Message us: from your account, which goes straight to your coach and stays on the record.

While you are in there: check that your emergency contact is current. Staff can see it, and it is only useful if it is right.

These instructions are taken from the safety rules and emergency instructions in the Fit 901 member agreement — the Make-Up Session and Unsupervised Access Agreement. If you have signed it, they are terms you agreed to, not suggestions.

Nothing on this page is medical advice, and none of it replaces calling 911.
