Fit 901
Memphis, TN — Tactical & First Responder Coaching

Fitness That Works
When It Matters

Tactical fitness training isn't about looking the part — it's about performing when it counts. Fit 901 trains military, law enforcement, firefighters, and first responders for the real demands of the job.

Coaching credibility

Led by a Memphis Fire Department Fire Lieutenant and Firefighter Paramedic, in the fire service since 1994 — not a trainer guessing at what your job demands.

You're responsible for other people's worst days. The job doesn't care if you're tired, stiff, or twenty pounds heavier than you should be.
Turnouts, SCBA, stair climbs, drags, carries
Force-on-force, foot pursuits, defensive tactics
Shift work, odd hours, high stress
Strength, conditioning, body composition, recovery
Firefighters in turnout gear on the front lawn of a burning two-story house, fire showing from the upper windows and through the front porch. One of them, in a red helmet, is at the steps with a charged hoseline, about to go in.
This is the job. The programming here is built backwards from it. Lt. Yahn is in the red helmet, about to make entry on T5 with E8, first in on arrival in the 8's territory.

You're strong enough to get by. But you know that's not enough.

If you're honest, you can feel the gap between what the job demands and how you're currently showing up. Maybe it's the extra weight that makes bunker gear feel heavier than it used to. Maybe it's your knees getting out of the rig, your back after a long shift, or your lungs after one too many flights of stairs.

You're not lazy. You're not clueless. You're stuck between real responsibilities and a body quietly telling you it needs a better plan.

What you actually want

  • Strong enough to move people, tools and gear without second-guessing your body
  • Conditioned enough to work hard in full kit and still have more in the tank
  • Leaner, healthier and more resilient, so the job doesn't slowly grind you down
  • Confident you're doing what you reasonably can to protect your health, your career and the people depending on you

That's the work we do here — serious people, given the coaching, structure and accountability to build capacity that lasts.

Regular gym fitness won't prepare you for the demands of your job

Functional fitness for tactical roles is a different discipline than commercial fitness.

Generic fitness
  • Measured by aesthetics, one-rep maxes, or general endurance metrics
  • Built on standardized programming everyone follows the same way
  • Optimized for how training looks, not how it performs under stress
Tactical fitness
  • Measured by job-specific capability, injury prevention, and performance under stress
  • Built on the real physical demands of your role — load, distance, time, environment
  • Optimized for durability across a 10-, 20-, or 30-year career, not a single event

Durability over peak performance — you need to perform for years, not for one event

Load-bearing and sustained exertion, built for the real world, not the gram

Movement quality under fatigue — how you move when it actually matters

Injury prevention is the baseline. You can't do your job hurt.

The Fit 901 tactical training model

Tactical athlete coaching built on four pillars — not a repackaged gym program.

01

Job-Specific Assessment

We start by analyzing the actual physical demands of your role — not a gut feeling. Load, distance, time, environment.

02

Durability-First Programming

Your program is built for long-term capability, not peak performance. Movement quality, injury prevention, sustainable progression.

03

Real-World Application

Exercises earn their place because they build the exact capability your job demands — gear-weighted carries, load-bearing endurance, explosive movement under fatigue.

04

Accountability & Adaptation

Coaching, not just a workout plan. We track your progress against job-specific standards and adapt as you go.

Programs built for real demands

Every role has different demands. Your training reflects yours.

Military (Combat Arms)

Load-bearing endurance, explosive power, sustained performance in heat and altitude, field-relevant conditioning.

Law Enforcement (SWAT / Tactical)

Tactical readiness, rapid deployment fitness, sustained high-intensity effort, grip strength, and agility.

Firefighting & Rescue

Heavy load-bearing (equipment + victim), sustained exertion in heat, stair climbing under load, lateral movement and stability.

First Responders (General)

Rapid deployment, sustained cardiorespiratory performance, injury prevention, and resilience under stress.

Coached by someone who has done the job

Fit 901 was founded and is led by Rob Yahn. This is not theoretical — it is coaching from someone who has lived the physical demands of a dangerous job for three decades.

Rob's own before and after — trained first for tactical performance, and now for functional longevity.

Fire Lieutenant, Memphis Fire Department

In the fire service since 1994 and with MFD since 1996 — a 32-year career, most of it downtown and midtown on some of the busiest truck companies in the country. Promoted to Lieutenant at the Fire Training Center, where he has trained and evaluated firefighters across the department.

Firefighter Paramedic

More than 30 years running emergency medical calls. He has seen where the preventable version of this ends, which is why the programming here is built around durability rather than a test score.

USAW Certified Coach · CrossFit Level 2 Trainer

USA Weightlifting certified and CF-L2, coaching strength and health for more than fifteen years, and training others since the early 1990s.

Krav Maga Global certified instructor

Certified in Combat/Fight and Third Party Protection, trained in the United States, Europe and Israel — hands-on defensive tactics grounded in application rather than theory.

Who this is for — and who it isn't

You don't need to already be in shape. You do need to be honest about where you are.

This is a strong fit if you are
  • An active firefighter, paramedic, EMT, police officer or member of the military in the Memphis area
  • A serious applicant preparing for fire academy, police academy, military selection or tactical tryouts
  • A coach, medic or support staff whose job still demands physical readiness under stress
  • A performance-minded adult who wants strength, conditioning and longevity — not just aesthetics
  • Willing to show up, follow a plan and let coaches coach you
  • Ready to invest time, effort and resources in your health and performance
We're not the right fit if you want
  • The cheapest option in town
  • A place to wander in, do your own thing and disappear in the corner
  • Flashy equipment, mirrors and nightclub lighting
  • Quick fixes, shortcuts or gimmick programs
  • Coaching that tells you what you want to hear instead of what you need to hear
  • A place to ignore your health while you wait for retirement to figure it out

If you're price shopping or you're not ready to be coached, we're probably not your place. If you're serious about doing this right, we'd be glad to talk.

Your training path starts with an assessment

The cost of tactical fitness training is small next to the cost of being unprepared for your job. An injury or a failed fitness standard costs far more than consistent, intelligent training — we'd rather help you avoid both.

Initial assessment — a role-specific demands analysis
Programming matched to your role's actual demands, and scaled to you
Ongoing coaching and accountability
Regular performance check-ins against your job's standards

When physician-led support belongs in the picture

For some adults — especially with stubborn weight, metabolic issues, or a long history of trying — medical support can be appropriate.

Fit 901 does not practice medicine. We do not diagnose conditions, prescribe medications, or decide who qualifies for any therapy.

When it's relevant and you're interested, we coordinate with licensed medical providers who handle every medical decision:

  • Whether any medication or therapy is appropriate for you at all
  • What type, what dose, and for how long
  • How lab work, side effects and safety get monitored over time

Our role is coaching: strength and conditioning, nutrition guidance, habits and accountability. Their role is medicine. And whether or not medication is ever part of your plan, it is the consistent work in the gym and in your daily habits that moves the needle.

What happens after you reach out

You don't need a perfect plan to start. You need to start the conversation.

  1. 1We contact you within about 24 hours — often sooner — to schedule a short call.
  2. 2On the call we ask about your job, your schedule, your current training if any, your injuries, and your goals — and work out whether we can actually help.
  3. 3If it sounds like a fit, we book your initial consultation and walk you through what training here actually looks like.
  4. 4At that session we map where you're going, what's been in the way, and how we get around it — then build the plan and put it on the calendar.
  5. 5If it's not a fit, we tell you that directly — and point you somewhere better if we can.

No hard sell. No pressure. An honest conversation about whether we can help.

What you need to know

It's not a knock on either — it's a different focus. Tactical training is built around your role's actual physical demands: carrying load, working under fatigue, and repeating hard efforts on no notice. The emphasis is durability and injury prevention over general fitness metrics.
